Billy is a kid, abused from childhood, who has run away from home, only to live in an abandoned train carriage taking the plunge into the world, all alone. Along the way, he meets up with Old Billy, a homeless old hobo not unlike himself. Old Billy is a drunk who drinks away his sorrows, torn from reality by the death of his only child Jesse, and a year later by the death of his wife. Old Billy drinks to keep his ghosts alive, and to keep the past intact. Billy meets s girl called Caitlin and she works at McDonalds. Caitlin is the rich, spoilt girl who works ate McDonald's, despite her immense wealth, mopping floors. As she mops, she notices a young lad, about sixteen, eating the leftovers of other people's food, and wonders whether to get the manager or not. But she leaves him alone to eat his disgusting food that other people have half eaten. They become friends and then they become even closer (boyfriend girlfriend). Billy helps bill and bill helps Billy. Caitlin invites them to her place for some dinner and that is the Simple Gift. Welfare wants to know what’s happening otherwise they will take Billy away. Old bill allows Billy to stay with him as parent guardian.
